Bollards
Parking lot bollards are vertical parking restraint barriers. Usually made of concrete or steel, decorative or not. Hydraulic, fold down, planters, ornamental, surface mount or submerged; literally thousands of styles. For our purposes here, we refer to the simplest and strongest and most common. The standard steel commercial bollard. Usually found at corners of buildings, under roof overhangs or other places where vehicles are not to hit or go. Usually painted yellow for maximum visibility. Installed submerged in the ground (to the frost line) for maximum strength. Sizes are technically I.D. (inside diameter) in 1/1000". For our purposes we use, 4", 6", 8", 10", 12" outside dia. We use 8' lengths submerged 3.5' ( below frost line) into the ground, leaving 5.5' above ground for visibility through car rear windows. Prices include: utility locates, augering of holes, disposal of earth, backfilling with concrete, saw-cutting of asphalt, replacing asphalt and painting posts with traffic paint.
Cant strips
A cant strip ( for our purposes) is a 45 degree diagonal build up of asphalt or concrete at the intersection of a vertical plane (brick wall) and a horizontal plane (asphalt or concrete surface, driveway or sidewalk). A waterproofing technique.
Catch basins
Our most common service regarding catch-basins is the rebuilding of them due to the collapse of the brickwork between the metal catch-basin frame and the 4'-5' high catch-basin itself. These house bricks were the original method to adjust the difference between the basin and frame in the original construction and paving. Due to hydrostatic water pressure under the surface of the asphalt which results in pressure bearing against the backside of the bricks pushing them into the basin resulting in the frame above collapsing. As well in a heavy storm the bricks have been known to get washed down the connecting sewer line resulting in a blockage. Resulting in costly excavation and paving. Since 1974 a pre-cast wire re-enforced concrete collar (lift, riser, ring, etc.) originally sold under the brand name of Moduloc ( modular interlocking) was introduced. The solution is to excavate all the existing brickwork and replace with the collars. Another aliment is a sunken catch-basin that needs to be raised, cars bottoming out or too steep an incline making for hazardous winter conditions for pedestrians. The solution again is to install collars to the proper height. A raised catch-basin that is too high is caused by the frost pushing them up, resulting in snow plows hitting them and a trip hazard. The solution is the same if there is brickwork. If not the concrete catch-basin must be jack-hammered down, formed and re-poured.
